Might not be the most exciting answer but I'd take the diesel version of the Chevrolet Cruze. Big trunk, not bad interior space. ho-hum acceleration, but pretty good fuel range for a small diesel. Here's the most important thing: if anything goes wrong along the way, its easier to find a shop/service bay. Parts and service bays for domestic makes are still more common than for imports in places that are away from the coasts.

Since I'm the one asking, this is what I'd go with. A Peugeot 307 SW (since I live in Europe) with the 2.0L or 1.6L HDI. Dead reliable engine, great chassis for winding roads, lots of room for a huge road trip, fuel efficient (more than 40 MPG on the latest models), and doesn't look that bad.
And easy to sell afterwards.

Look at my answer, I would go for a mid size diesel wagon.

This. Utter comfort, capable cruising and RWD for hooning purposes.
Plus, what's a road-trip story without some vehicular plight?

Nice. I assumed you were from the States; our options for diesel long-distance cruisers are a lot more limited here.

For a highway road trip... Audi A6 Avant
For rugged 'road' trips... Toyota Landcruiser 70,80,100 or 200 series

This. Our family has a '99 Suburban with 250,000 miles on it, all from road tripping. We're unfortunately going to have to retire it soon because of the terrible mpgs it's been getting lately (8 city, 15 highway max).
